Just pull the #1 spark plug and put your thumb over the hole. Have someone tap the starter repeatedly until you feel compression pressure pop your thumb out of the plug hole. If the distributor is timed right, the rotor should be very near the #1 plug tower on the cap. If it's pointing toward #6, you've got the dizzy in 180 degrees off. Either rearrange the plug wires, or reposition the distributor.
