ALL connections need to be clean and tight as the start to avoiding electrical fires, "just running a heavier gauge wire" is not the approach, understanding the particular system is, and having the
correct gauge wires everywhere
if you have an external voltage regulator, are you sure you have an alternator? is the regulator
like this or is it
like this? - the first is the regulator for an
externally regulated alternator, it is as likely to be your problem as the alternator itself ... the 2nd one is an original regulator for the generator system - the regulator and wiring have to be changed to switch to an alternator - see
here to identify what you actually have, and then get to discussing your situation with a qualified auto electric shop, switching to an internally regulated alternator [10 or 12SI] will be beneficial
