I discussed this thought with my brother who makes his living using CAD to design tooling used in a CNC shop to mass-produce parts commercially. Auto manufacturers seem to be their biggest customers these days.
He has a small manual machine shop at home and said it would take him 40 hours or more to make a hub using his own stuff. But if he could use CNC equipment after the design was complete it might only take an hour to turn out a part.
At this point it's an idea I'll hold in reserve until I feel like your approach is proven to work or not. The project I'd use it on is definitely not one I'll do in 2010 or likely even 2011 anyway.
