I've been meaning to look into that as well, could be the simplest option.
However others have looked into this and never report back with a completed solution either simple or difficult, so far no results that I know of for single wheel 8 lug disc on original axle or hubs. This is why I didn't investigate this rout first, I trusted that others have, but I'm beginning to think I should at least give it a few hours of searching and figuring to decide for myself.
It'll take a fabricated caliper bracket for sure.

I'd also like to investigate original spindles and axle with different hubs.
Until I get a chance to pull my original 1 ton axle apart does anyone have any bearing numbers or diameters for the original stuff?
