The marks on flywheel are there as sort of a convenience..if you don't want to use them, or think they are screwy, don't use them. If you have the time, and this is truly a timing issue, you can dink around with the distributor.

If you play long enough, you can get it running, then tune the engine by ear or performance.

It isn't uncommon for a gear head to grab his distributor wrench and head for the nearest hill to hand tune his engine under a load.
