Just to back up what automarc has said. Timing the camshaft is THE critical step in finishing any motor. Not only because it means being able to start the motor once you go to the trouble of putting it back in the vehicle. But, it also ensures that the valves don't come into contact with the pistons the first time you run the starter, causing serious damage and requiring you to haul the motor (sic) out and rebuild it all over again. It's easy to get confused when your mind gets going, but it's actually not that complicated if you just follow the directions in the MANUAL. Don't try to figure it out, just read the directions.
