In regards to the coil deal, I understand it a little differently. The primary windings don't short out per se, they short out turn to turn thus reducing the affected primary number of turns..this makes a weakling out of the coil.
As the under hood temps increase, so does the coil and the resistance in the wire. The already marginal coil now has to fight the increased electrical resistance and falls into the marginal catergory. This results in weak spark and loss of power. This is how I understand it, but I'm just a recently retired Millwright on a fixed income.
