Leonard, O.K., you got the idea now. Even if it does off-center again, you know how to reset it now. I'd wait & make up a bolt/tool. Sounds like you have some fab. skills so just keep in mind you DON'T want to push down with pressure & bend the shuttle valve, just put a 'blocker' in the middle to prevent it from sliding end to end.
Shouldn't be much press. there but a small leak should have no bad effect.
Did you try annealing the cu. washers as suggested to make them softer so as to seat & seal better? I've never had to do that, but when you're working on someone elses equip. (and getting paid by the job) you tend to pull things down tighter & harder.
