http://www.nastyz28.com/bbcmenu.html that link is for general Big Block casting numbers and manufacturing dates, and the 366s are spread out throughout it, but it's got some okay info. Seems like they started making the 366 in the mid to late 60s for two-ton truck applications, but I think the end dates on this page are wrong. There were different castings for this motor, but the website suggests the latest production year for any was 1985. I think the engine made into the early 90s and may have even seen fuel injection. Some of the Kodiak and Topkick style trucks I would swear ran that motor if you didnt opt for the dog CAT 3116.
I think I see the advantage of putting a 366 in a one ton - it's nice to have a tough motor that's maybe even overbuilt for the application its in, and the 366 has been around a while, so it may feel more period-correct in older vehicles than say a 454. Chevyvan, They also made a rare 427 ci variant of that same truck "tall block" big block that the 366 is based on. That's actually what I'd like to put in my bus but I doubt I'll find one.
I read on some chevy off-road forums that guys are putting 366s in K5s and pick-ups for a tough, torque-y rock crawler. The 366 apparently wasnt built for speed, but it's known to be tough.
I'm fascinated with this motor too obviously, if anyone finds horsepower and torque figures definitely post them. I read somewhere that the gross ratings were 235 hp and 350 on the torque, which shakes out to maybe 180-190 net horsepower and upper 200s to maybe 300 torque. She's a mule for sure.
