My brother n law unplugged the spark plug wire and the knock all but stopped. The way he explained it was that since its not firing its not getting slammed in there. He mentioned a bearing. Other than that he said that we can pull it and attempt to rebuild however since we are going to be pulling it out and if we find out along the way that its a no go on this engine it would probably be better to have another engine there ready to go.
