Judging by the condition of the plug wires I would say that the wires are WAY past overdue for replacement. Replace the wires doing one at a time so you do not get the order messed up. Plugs are around a buck a piece and since you are going to take them out I suggest replacing them as well.
You may find that the engine runs well with good wires and plugs cool
