It raises a few more questions we'd like answered if you wouldn't mind.
It would be helpful if you showed us the terminals you connected the 9V battery to. Are you saying that the meter needle was to the left and moved to midrange when you connected 9V? Are you able to test with 12V from a battery and see what happens? No need to install it in place before testing.
