Yeah, that's a lot. There's an adjustment screw on the passenger side of the steering gear, where the gear lash can be adjusted. The procedure is in the service manual, but if you loosen the locknut and turn the screw in and it gets better, that's the right direction. Just be careful not to get it too tight.
