Ron, when I replaced my rear main seal, I loosened everything up and pried the crank away from the block. Still a PITA to install the upper seal section. If I ever have to do it again, I'll go ahead and pull the crank completely out. I missed the opportunity to do that when I had the timing cover off to replace gaskets and seal there.
