Even if an outlet is only used occasionally, it's nice to have a few options about where to plug in things like welders, etc. I look at things from a longer-term perspective than most professional electricians who have some very legitimate concerns about meeting electrical code requirements and that pesky thing called "making a profit" and "not starving to death"! Whenever possible, I like to use wire at least one gauge above what code requires. Electrical codes are MINIMUM requirements- - - - -voltage drop is forever, and what I spend up front on lower-resistance wire will probably amortize itself pretty quickly by making my equipment more efficient over the long haul.
