I believe the manual says to back it off 1/6 turn and if that doesn't line up for the cotterpin then continue backing it off to the next available castellation. Note, this is done with the tire and wheel off and by spinning the drum/hub only. As soon as you put the load back on the tapered bearings the play will be gone as they self center.
