Just thinking rather stream of thought here. Having 55 foot pounds of torque on the castle nut will overheat the bearings, and having play is also not a good situation. Have you tried swapping the castle nuts from one side to another? If you are real lucky, the cotter pin holes may be milled a little differently allowing a more reasonable preload.
