The bearings are a barrel roller. The manual procedure is for a two and a half ton axle with tapered roller bearings.
If I hadn't experienced the steering wheel shimmy I may have not even paid any attention to the bearing clearance. Now that I'm aware, I cant help think that a fine tune will improve steering and handling of the truck, beyond solving a mechanical issue. I intend to drive this baby as often as I can. I hope refining fifty nine year old technology will make my truck more enjoyable.
I have been guilty of overthinking , some times a benefit, sometimes not so much......
