I think these would be a perfect time to loose those inhibitions...
If you'll search MP&C's posts and links you should find plenty of reasons and support for considering taking the project on yourself.
If it still seems to daunting just buy a new set of fenders since what your asking for involves welding, grinding and bumping anyway.
One route costs Time, the other costs Money. I haven't found any other routes.
