I'll be the last person to argue with what you said above. You say you've taught welding classes. I've never even taken a welding class.
I've been fortunate enough to have a friend show me how to use a MIG welder for sheet metal. I'm smart enough not to try anything structural at this early stage. I'm making steady progress with my skills. I test my welds too. I skipped over OAW. I just don't know that it was a mistake (or lazy) to do so. I don't have a real shop and a MIG setup was something I could find room for (just barely).
I just can't see that everyone needs to start with OAW. It depends on the aptitude of the student doesn't it?
