Pertronix is more or less an electronic switch that replaces the points. Both it and the HEI work by what is called the Hall effect. Why the Pertronix needs a ballast resistor, I'm not sure, I guess something to do with the design of the circuit. I'm not sure but can the Pertronix be used with a stock 12 volt Delco coil, or does it have to use their own coil? HEI usually has the coil built into the distributor. Though early Chevy 6 cylinders used one with a separate coil.....
