Good morning guys n gals.
Just joined and would like to show my '66 (I think) C-50 stake truck.
At first I fell for the look of "Goliath" on Youtube but then looked at how long my bed was and knew that wouldn't work.
Purchased from a shop that was going out of business and is supposedly low mileage.
I had an older dump similar to this one, way back when I was a kid on a sod farm.
The engine runs very well and is just a 3spd for now.
I'll be looking for more info on gear ratios and engine (283) and maybe even a trans swap from another 4-5spd truck.
Do you guys know if the 6cyl would pull a trailer and a 9K lb tractor/loader?

Was hoping to take the stake sides down and make compartments between cab and wheels.
Have it all sand blasted and painted 'purdy'..

Can any of you guys suggest a front brake swap to DISCS that is a 'bolt on' say from a later truck?

Thanks E

Welcome to the Stovebolt, Errol. With that size truck I think you'll be asking a lot of questions in the BIG BOLT forum. That's a pretty nice looking truck. Yep, needs a little work but spend some time with it and put it to work. That's what those babies were built for. Be sure to take pics a long the way.

Since this is the Welcome Centre it would be better to ask those questions in the most appropriate forum. Example, gear ratio's would probably be best in the BIG Bolt or Driveline forum and the engine questions in the engine forum.....but don't worry, if a moderator thinks a post would be better in another forum he'll move it and let you know.

Good luck on a sweet project. (one day I'm gonna have a big bolt)!

Thanks guys..
I'm in a dozen or so forums (it's a shame that one has to register for every single forum but..)
I'll start diggin through the threads and ask in BIG Bolt.

So, does this look like a 2 1/2 ton or ..?

Thanks Errol

"Do you guys know if the 6cyl would pull a trailer and a 9K lb tractor/loader?"

Pull it?.... yes it will but you won't keep up with traffic if that is what your asking. And what 6 cylinder? The GMC's have more displacement up to 302+ but the Chevies are done at 261 CID.
So your question needs more info in it.

Welcome to the "Bolt",Errol! I agree with 53 moneypit, and the previous owner of my '55 T.F. 6500,pulled a back-hoe behind the truck, loaded it ,then would pull it "home",many times with a "good"load on "Her",and pulling the backhoe besides! My truck is equipped with a 261,SM 420 trans, and a vac. 2-speed rear-end.Just give yourself plenty of braking space, and don't expect to go over 45-50 M.P.H.'depending on the load/gears. If your truck is a '65,it should be equipped with a 292,or a 250. my guess would be a 292,for a C-50,or larger. The 235's and 261's were phased-out about '63,if memory serves me correctly. Have fun with "Her",and please keep us up-dated on your progress! Thanks for the pic's! B.T.W.,the C-50 should be a "light" 2-ton. Do you have a red,(or black),button on your shifter? If so,then you have a 2-speed. Check your data plate near your driver's side door pillar. It will give you more info. Hope this helps.

Interesting video on the link below. This truck has the GMC 302, but still hauls the load nicely. Errol, your truck should have the 292 straight six.

Thanks guys for the responses.
Anyone care to guess at the length of the bed?
And what type of drivers license will I need?
A chaufers' or "C" or??
Anybody got a good antique insurance companys?

The truck is about an hour from me and won't be bringing it home til I can get some other stuff out.
BUT, got a friend that thinks he's got a later model chevy that I can see if it's got a 4-5spd and if it's a 2spd rear..
He's been 'diagnosed' and I'm gonna be helping to haul things to scrap.

Errol
