Also the handle jams. took the side panel off but very hard to see whats going on. Maybe a new regulator? 49 Suburban. all advice appreciated

Might be easier to take the regulator our of the door for closer inspection? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | The regulator when correctly set-up will almost roll down just from vibration. The mechanism is not very complicated. The regulator assembly has to be removed to do any maintenance on it. Are you getting any interference from the window channels, wipers, etc? If no you need to pull the window regulator out and probably buy a rebuild kit for the geared shaft that attaches to the handle. This assembly is riveted in place so buy a rebuild kit before you tear into it. When you reassemble, lube it with a high quality grease. I rebuilt both of mine and they have been trouble free ever since. In fact going over bumps they roll down a little bit. I will also share with you that any aftermarket regulator will strip out and fail very quickly, when I sold parts original assemblies were a big seller for this reason, the originals are very high quality, most are still working some 60+ years later. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | I'm sure I posted this a bunch of times before Richard. But if you didn't see it, here is the rebuild that I did to my regulators. I made new posts from CRS, which you can do on your Leblonde and I punched out new leathers from some scrap material I got from Tandy leather. The new posts have a tubular rivet shank turned on the end from dimensions given in the JayCee rivet catalog. They were set using a ball bearing in the press. I did mine five years ago, and I installed new window run channels at the same time. They roll up and down just like a new window, quite easely and I have no trouble with them slipping down. In other words they stay put where I leave them. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/1950_doors&page=all Denny G

I broke a window and ruined a regulator all because my passenger side window was cut wrong by the glass man....the futher up I rolled it the worst it got and locked up. In the end the guy cut me a new glass, no charge, and the new ones is smooth as silk.
Yes, agree with Brad. Any windows with some age on them seemed to go down on a rough road. My cure back then , and even now, is to set the handle so that when the window is up the handle is in position that the weight of the handle is pushing as if trying to roll the window up.
Weeds, let us know what you find. (Denny, good job on yours) | | | | | Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 | Alvin,Denny, don and brad. Thanks for the replies. I have both panels off of the door but I am stumped as what to do next. How does the regulator come out? from the bottom or the top> Do I need to take the glass out? must be an easy way. I need some help

First is you crank the window down until you can see 4 clutch head screws that hold the glass frame to the channel through the holes in the door itself. These have probably never been apart so spray some good penetrant on them, they are short about 3/8" long. This will then allow you to roll the regulator away from the window. It tips forward and you bring it out. You also need to remove the inner trim around the glass/door frame. Now remove the handle from the regulator, they have two set screws one outer and then an inner. A long thin standard blade is required. The channel on the regulator then can be slid off and removed. Now remove the screws from the area around the window crank hole. Inside the door there is a track, the bottom roller goes in you need to slide that roller out. The window regulator can now be collapsed and fished out the bottom hole. This takes a bit of finesse but it will collapse and come out. There is an open semi-circle gear, check it for bent or missing teeth. If this is your trouble it is time to find a new regulator. Where the window crank attaches to the gear train there is a riveted cover you have to remove the rivets to access that. There are good rebuild kits available. Do it once and you will know how to do this forever, not particularly easy but in a couple hours you will know what you are dealing with. As a note there is a Cab Manual for the 47-50 trucks that covers this procedure, I do not have the electronic version only a hard copy. Hopefully another poster might as it helps the first time you do this. Brad, I went to my shop manual which I should have done in the first place and I almost have it out. Anxious to see what the problem is so I can fix it

There is no apparent damage to the large sector gear however I can't see the small gear. Do I now have to grind out the rivets to expose the small gear? What if the small gear is damaged? does a repair kit have a new small gear? Hey you guys, thanks for all the help.

You want to put some grease in with that rebuild kit. I have heard of a few people that put a zerk in the metal enclosure but I just filled mine with a heavy grease we used in rebuilding 4100 P&H shovels, it doesn't leak out and cold/ heat does not affect it. I don' think it is available retail SLS EP 503-2 this is their phone 205-945-4991. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2003 Posts: 1,132 | I ordered the rebuild kit this afternoon.
