Hey everyone! I made a post earlier about putting a 261 in my 1950 3/4 ton chevy PU which I appreciate all the fast and informative replies. Here is my next question. My intentions for this truck is to have my son help me build this over the next few years and let him have it as a 16th B-Day gift. We will do all the work ourselves and stick with the original look and feel. Should I update to the 261 or should I make it true blue stock and stick with going back to the 216 in which it would be worth more down the road? And does anyone have a easy build 216 available as mine has a 1/4 inch crack running down all cylinders. I am open for any and all opinions. Just looking for that inspirational one that will help set our path!

Since you have to change engines anyhow, go with the 261 I'm sure you will be glad you did. A little more power makes any vehicle easier to drive, and more fun.

Unless you are going to do an absolutely "bone stock" restoration, I'd bet that the value of the truck would be more with the 261 engine. If you are really worried about the diminished future value, just keep an eye out for a used 216 engine (with correct casting numbers), so you have it available if you ever sell the "restored" truck.

Thanks for the input everyone! You have convinced me of the 261. I just needed the extra nudge.

There is a discussion going on here I believe I saw it on the "engine/driveline" section you should read. A stovebolter has a 216 engine that seems to be in good shape and willing to sell. You might check it out if you're determined on a 216. Personally I would prefer an upgrade and away from those babit bearings.

if your going to update the 6 you might as well update it all the way and install a 292 from the 1970s

You could use a 216 valve cover on a 261 to make it "look" stock. To make it a driver for todays roads and speeds, you will want a T-5 tranny or an O.D. and definately radial tires. A brake upgrade will be most important.

I have a usable 216 out of a 40 car that I'll GIVE you if you need it. I'll throw the rear axle assembly in with it. All you have to do is come get it. Unless you're going to work the truck you'll see little advantage with the 261.

I had all sorts of plans for mine before I ran the numbers and realized it still had the original drivetrain in it. That changed plans, I thought it was cool and plan on keeping it 90% stock. I wouldnt go that route unless your a purist. Think about it, if you want to give the truck to your son are you gonna add those safety items like seatbelts or turn signals that didnt come with the truck originally?

I really dont think it is that big of a deal or will make any difference to the future value. Use the 261. Keep it stock-ish if your really concerned. Im doing upgrades on mine like 'painting' the drivetrain and frame. Go figure, if somebody wants to get all anal about me painting it, tough cr@p. I did a good job that will last till Im dead and gone.

What about upgrading the brake system? Another good thing if your future 16 year old will be driving it.

Think about all that before you decide what route to go. And remember WE WANT PICTURES! grin By the way, Welcome to the bolt! Good luck in your project.

Jeff

I took out my old babbit pounder for a 261. Horse power increases from about 92 to 150. Has the same look except for those 2 little nuts on top.
