Last night a 1948 Chevy COE stake bed was on the Barrett-Jackson auction block. The cab was dropped on a modern GM drive train with a 350 and automatic transmission and a bunch of modern bells and whistles. Check out their auction site; it is lot #430.2. Based on one picture, it is a beautiful truck.

With the buyers premium it went for $97,900 and as I post this, for the moment is the highest value vehicle so far.

Maybe I made a mistake keeping my COE mostly stock, (just kidding).

I watched that last night. Amazing how fast it sold! Commentators were saying the era for collector trucks is coming up in auctions.

That was crazy!! I was also very confused when the vette behind it only went for $27k or so. As pretty as the COE may have been, what on earth do you do with something like that? I'd take the vette any day

$97,000 and all you get is a lousy 350 & auto trans?
Should have been at least a 6BT Cummins.

Looks pretty nice! But is it really a "Two year frame-off restoration" with a modern, non-original drivetrain? I always thought a restoration was to bring something back to like new, original condition? This is more like todays retro pony cars. I'll stick with the old stuff.

Im just curious but if you drug that truck out of the woods and took it to a restoration shop and told them this is what you wanted the end product to be, how much would the bill be at the end. I don't know but I would think you could build that truck for way less than that, even if you paid the shop to do it all.

I agree with the use of the term restoration. I heard Mike Joy talk about a Ford p/up on Saturday and how nicely it was restored. It was a hot rod! the body had all kinds of alterations inside and out, under the hood, etc and a fancy paint job, chrome engine. I always thought restored meant back to or close to original.
I do think it is a beautiful truck though and wouldn't mind seeing it in my garage. I just wouldn't want to stroke the check someone paid for it.

I agree with you, all that money and it only has a 350 & auto trans....A 6BT Cummins would have been more interesting...

For the quality of the work and materials, be it original or modified, I suspect whoever had it built forked out more than the selling price.
Hiring out work like that is expensive.... I once worked at a restoration shop and no matter how you go about it to do the best work it takes time and time cost money.

Just because a vehicle cost so much to restore doesn't mean it's worth it, which is often the case.. But if you were to duplicate the work sure it'll cost that much again, so if that's the truck someone else had dreamed of building they might have gotten a deal by purchasing it already done.

Well lets don't complain too much, because it
brings attention to the fact that these old

Chris,

Original high production cars and trucks in most cases are worth less than if they were modified, sad to say. Look at all of the modified/street rods from the 30's up at these auctions bringing 70, 90 or 100K + while the originals bring 30 or 40K.

I know streetrodders that look for high point originals to chop up because they get a good foundation to start with and in many cases they get lots of NOS sheet metal. They don't have to search for anything, it's all there and that's worth a lot to them because time is money!

I love it!

I have a whopping $4k in mine with a TBI350/700R4 that I'll fab in myself.

I like the $90,000 in equity I have in my truck, LOL!~
