Anyone got it figured out how to get a title in Wisconsin? I have a bill of sale from Minnesota for one of my 48 GMC's....

You may want to title it in Minnesota first, then transfer it. Perhaps Minnesota has a lost title search.

@TooMany2Count and Woogeroo - Thanks for the links, unfortunately they states what I already knew, that you need to have an assigned title in Wisconsin to get a new one in your name. I do not have an assigned title, I have a bill of sale, from the guy I bought it from in Minnesota.

@641Workmaster - nope. I tried them the other day. They said a bill of sale would be good enough if it had all the correct information in it, including the sellers name and contact info. Unfortunately the bill of sale that I have is incomplete, and I can't even get a hold of him anymore.

I might just have to find a different one with a title and use this one as a donor.

i found the privious owners 1949 chev trk 10m certificate of registration paper with the title no. on.. the wi. dmv told me along with a bill of sale i could get privious owners replace then swithch to me. i hope that it works for me in the next two weeks good luck with yours

Do you have "bonded titles" in your state? In mine, you can get a bond for the vehicle value, then title it against the bond. If no one protests the registration in a two year window, you can re-title as clear.

I also bonded one, simple process but a bit of a waiting game. Only cost me $150 total. You buy a bond through your insurance company for a $100, submit it to the DMV headquarters. They send out a rep to verify the ID/VIN plate and then send you a form to take to the registration office. Title transfer cost $50. Just have to be patient and wait on the mailing process,

If you haven't already call your state DMV and ask them how to proceed. ALL states have a way to resolve any titling issue and it's always best to get that info straight from the source. Depending on who you talk with, you may or may not get someone familiar with your particular issue so more than one phone call may be necessary.

I talked to people at our DMV last summer, but I suppose I could try again. Someone new might know something that the last person didn't. Last time I was told there was absolutely no way I can get a title in Wisconsin for a truck that was last titled in Minnesota without the title. I have the last license plates still on the truck, but have no registration papers either. Minnesota DMV said they cannot trace it based off of the license plates or the truck ID plate in the door jam. I'll try again next week.

I've found that dealing with DMV in Va it's best to go and spend the time in line and ask. If the person you're talking to doesn't know then the you can ask another clerk. I've gotten titles for trucks by using the VIN and getting the name of last owner then using the last know address and DMV forms sent letter and waited the time then get title from DMV.Larry

Don't tell them any more than necessary. Just tell them that you need to bond a title. They will tell you what info they will need and do a search for a previous owner (within the state that you live in). If no one shows up, which they won't since it was last registered in MN, they will proceed with you getting a bond for it. You will probably need to call your states DMV headquarters for the bonded title, not your local one,

Check with WI again. About 10 years ago the WI DMV stance was find the original title, no other options. However, more recently I checked into the process when dealing on a vehicle and they had a form for titling without the original. The deal fell through, so I didn't actually go through the process.

I did go through the process 10 years previous and did have to title a truck in MN first. MN DMV had me submit a statement from previous owner selling me the truck and then take out a bond based on current value. Bond was for 10% and I got that through my insurance company. Once the bond period was over, title was clear in my name.

The last time I talked to WI DMV, in 2005 which was when I bought the truck, they stated there was no way to a get a title without a bill of sale that had a bunch of info on it that I don't have. Today it seems as if things may have changed a little. I will need to call Madison and find out what hoops I need to jump through, and how high they are. If I could find the guy I bought it from he could make it a whole lot easier on me.

... all the states are getting tough. S.C. is not exception. The DMV is giving my neigbor a hard time and he HAS a title. He finally pulled the old GMC to the DMV...an older lady came out, looked at it, wrote down a few numbers and told him the title, if all checked clear, would be to him in 30 days. That is WITH a title.

I laugh when I see ads that say "no title but its easy to get one". I just tell them "well, if its that easy YOU go get the titel and I'll give you and extra 100 dollars. I never hear from them again.

Most of it has to do with all the fraud that's been going on in the collector vehicle market, especially with Musclecars. A swap of a VIN and title can take a $2000 beater car and make it worth into the 6 digit range or more by making a "rare" model.

Im from MN and when i bought my truck from a guy up in Two Harbors he just gave me the bill of sales. I went down to the DMV and they said all i needed was the bill of sales and 4 pictures of the truck and they could draw up a new title.
All the guy gave me was a piece of paper that explained the truck and that he was selling it to me then we both signed.I didn't think that was very official but the Lady at the DMV said it'l work.
You may want to try that then transfer it over to WI.
I had another Stovebolt that already had a title so i used that on the new truck, but i thought the process wasn't too bad considering the horror stories i hear

I have read the guides thoroughly numerous times, I have been to the DMV office in person, now I need to call the WI DMV main office because the "live" people can't help me, because apparently the bill of sale I have doesn't have enough information on it. Rumor has it the main office can do a "research" on it, and then I might be able to get a bonded title. I have even tried calling the guy I bought if from in Minnesota to get a new bill of sale with better info, but he won't respond to my calls. Ah, the frustration of it all. But - I will persevere! I just need to take the time. As with most people, I need to work to support my ND habit, and I get to work before the DMV is open, I leave after they're closed, and I have a hard time finding the time to call during the day. Hopefully next week will slow down a little for me. Will keep you informed.

I don't normally recommend them because of past activity. They've been in trouble in the past for issuing fraudulent titles. As a last resort if it comes to that you might consider Broadway Title.

The Registration Rights act would help this issue, the hearing has been moved to Thursday (tomorrow) at 10am Madison....I think they delayed it so that the folks speaking in favor will be thrown off schedule a bit.
