Hello all,
I found a 1940 1/2 ton Chevy pickup, and from just three pictures of outside, all is there except grille, yet to confirm what is under hood. The guy is asking $1000 or best offer. Is this reasonable if everything was there except the grille? Any thoughts would be great!

if you want it, buy it. it doesent matter what we think what matters is what do you think.

Hard question to answer....if there is a lot of rust / body damage, it could cost big $$ to repair. Mechanical not so bad, but could still cost $ 3,000 to rebuild motor, plus all the other " little " things add up. If it runs / stops, and is decent body, $ 1,000 is a good start.

Well Nevada - as you know a thousand bucks today for a truck is not a lot, but I agree with Ashton, the biggest question is do you like it. I go a lot by like - if you really like it, style etc. you can probably overcome a lot of the other problems you will no doubt run into. If you're ambivalent about it at the beginning, you will probably grow to hate it. Walk away. If you want a real opinion include some pics, and a good look under that hood would help if it was me. Does it run?

I agree with Cameo. Does it even roll? Find out about the powerplant. Is it a straight six? Updated straight six? V8? Will it turn over? Carb and other misc engine parts there? Interior decent? Glass? Pics would help... $1000 could be a great deal or a bust.

They guy says everything is there just the grille is missing; he has all the parts for it. I really do like this pickup, I was just wondering if what is being offered is decent for the price? Thanks all.

The big question is what do you want to do with it & how much can you do yourself. If you have to send it out to get the work done on it, it will turn into a nightmare. If you like to work on them like I do I don't think you will run out of work for a long time. If you want an up & running truck ready to go to the shows & cruise nights, you will be ahead buying one ready to go. The price is about right but I think I would try buying a little cheaper. You are going to have to haul it & it's obvious it's going to need everything.

With a title, that would be a great deal. without a title, not.

MMMM, I think its a bit high for this truck but then the area in which one lives also has a lot to do with it.

But, if YOU want it then satisfaction is cheap at any price.

Compared to trucks I've seen for sale in my state (Montana), I would say that $1,000 is a decent price. I've seen worse trucks go for $1,000 without an engine and transmission. I'm sure you already know it will be a lot of work and expense to get this truck back into good shape. I'm restoring a '41 and it's taking a lot more parts and the parts are more expensive than I would have thought at the beginning.

P.S. - When the guy says everything is there except the grille, he is not being honest. Just from the pictures, I can see well over $2,000 in parts that will have to be bought. I'm sure there is a lot more once the details become apparent.

The persons name that is selling it is Scott Oaks, have you heard anything of him? He has no reviews as a seller. Has been communicative so far and seems like he isn't hiding anything and is informative. Thanks for the help, I'll see what I can do.

I've seen better trucks on ebay recently, that one is a little rough, and is definitely missing more than just the grill.
Then again if its what you want, thats all that counts, just beat him down on the price if ya can!

Looking at your pic's, there are a lot of items needing replacement / repair. Rear fenders, running boards, grille, top grille trim, hood ornament floor panel, front & rear bumpers, complete interior,etc.etc. I think parts ( before mechanical stuff ) could run you $ 3,000 / $ 4,000. Also, I'm not sure it is a '40 ( no parking lights ? ) Maybe a '39 ?

Well, the guy said He'll take 750 including the title, I'm most likely am going to go with it. After looking at it a little more, it does look more like a 39, either way it's still a Chevy and the style I like! Parts and fixing up stuff isn't bothering me for now, this is just to buy to keep in the barn and fix after I do my 38, if I do both of them at the same time, I'll be looking at a BIG cost.
