with all the talk of different heaters in trucks I went out quick and took a couple of pics of what I have out back. sure was surprised when I got to looking at them,

....and none of them look like mine!!! Well, maybe #3.
Are they for sale?

Alvin don't want to have this moved to the parts for sale so you can call me on that one.

Was hoping that others would add their heaters to show the different types that are in the AD trucks, I know that some of these are not period corect, others with more knowledge of them can answer that, just wanted to show the different ones that I found in the parts bin

I hope that I am not highjacking this tread. My '54 3100 had a pretty good restoration by a previous owner, but some of the details were not completed ... like the controls for the heater. The shop manual, assembly manual, and the owners manual do not show the heater and operation.

This is the AirFlow heater mounted in the truck. A good looking unit, but the cable control is missing. The photo shows three attachment locations for the cable, plus pivot for door. I can't find a diagram of where and how they connect. Can you help?

This is the fan switch that I found in the truck. Don't know where it mounts, either. is it similar to the original? The truck has been converted to 12v. I haven't checked to see if the fan moter is 6v or 12v. I probably won't hook it up anyway. However, I want to make it look correct.

And while I'm asking questions - - where can I get a clip to hold the heater hoses to the fender well? There is hole for the clip about half way between the radiator and the fire wall.

This is a picture of a 12K original mile Fire Truck interior showing the correct locations for the knob/cable and the switch if you look here under the dash you will see the pre-drilled holes. I have seen that fan switch in some trucks but believe it to be after market. The heater is the correct one for your truck havng the small door. Here is a picture of the switch, they come in different colors some light others darker. Send me a PM on the clip. Last picture is of my early style recirculating with plate instead of decal correct for 47-50 trucks. Plates/decals are changeable for GMC or Chevrolet.

Heater 1 is a decal type recirculating correct for 51-55 1st series trucks.
Heater 2 is and Air-flow correct for 47-50 with plate instead of decal.
Heater 3 is the same as 2 but missing a plate.
Heater 4 After market (lots of different kinds).
Heater 5 41-early 47 vintage heater.
Heater 6 like Heater 2
Heater 7 is a decal type Air-Flow 54/55 1st series heater they all have the little interior door.
Heater 8 After market

Brad thanks for the break down of the heaters for me, had no idea of what was what thanks again, it may help out some others to.

Thanks for your photos and help. I also looked at more pics on your WebShots page. They helped clear up some of my questions.

I need to do some more research before I proceed with the heater.

The AirFlow heater on my '54 does not have a heater control valve. I guess the heater is on all the time. Since there is no valve, there is no heater control knob. And there is no bracket to hold the missing cable and knob for the heater door.

I still need a fender clip to secure the heater hoses. I'll send a PM to you this weekend with a pic.

Heater #5 was also available for 1947 Advance-Design trucks.

I have a 54 3100...same heater as yours...I'm on vacation at the moment..so my info is memory based ( Scary ). I just bought the truck 3 weeks ago and haven't had the chance to really get into her..but the heater I have has the same switch you have. The previous owner attached it to the dash on the left side of the steering wheel. ( white knob.. possibly painted)
Now the cable that operates the little trap door next to the side wall...that cable went under the dash along the firewall to the left side of the dash,next to the switch. it went thru dash with a black knob with " T " on it...I've always thought that was for throttle...so you could set the pace and work in the fields.. But now it stands for Temp...I guess.
I need to get a new cable due to mine being stuck/non moving. I sliced my finger real good trying to get that trap door open...Nothing like spilling blood while working on your truck...Part of the process.
Classic chevy parts sells the switch #68-312 for 12 volt, and I found a Throttle cable with knob # 29-357.
Haven't measured the cable thats on mine yet...Don't know what they used if not the one they are selling.
Also, where are the air/slots on your dash located...I need to get hoses and vent outlets..just don't know where to place them since i can't see any slots from on top side of dash.
If I remember correctly I have a pic on my site of the dash and the heater & T pull knob.

I just check my pics...The heater switch is in pic 7 of 17..white knob near steering wheel...In pic 4 of 17 you can just see the black knob above the cowl vent knob/handle...thats my Throttle/Temp pull cable....Now thats why they call it re-circulating right??? you open that flap and air inside the cab gets drawn back into housing to get re-warmed ?
Anyway..with the help of this forum I'm sure we can figure it out. Please keep in touch with your findings

Looks like the previous owners of your truck and mine did not install the heater control valve.

My heater has been a frustrating process. Long story, however, I finally got it all fixed and painted up, core checked for leaks... ready to install and it doesn't come close to fitting in the firewall. I had replaced the whole firewall several years ago because of all the holes hacked into it through the years.
