Occaisionally, when I stomp on it to start, I get an awful grinding/screeching noise which I assume is the starter gear not engaging the flywheel properly. If I wait a couple seconds and try it again, the starter engages correctly and the engine fires right up. I can think of a couple possible explanations:
A) All Stovebolts do this. It's part of the fun.
B) Something is worn out and needs to be replaced
C) I'm either stomping too hard or not hard enough, and this is causing the starter motor to energize before engaging the flywheel.
Thoughts? It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but it sure scares the people around me. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | It could be slop in the mechanism causing, as you said, the starter motor to energize before engaging the flywheel.
Another thing to check is the fly wheel. These engines always stop at one of 3 places. You might have worn teeth in those 3 places on the flywheel. If so the ring can be rotated.

Dale The arm that pushes the button has a fork on the end inside the starter. The fork ends have pegs that ride in a groove on the bendix. These pegs and the groove get worn. I don't think the problem is the flywheel or the starter motor gear. I inspected both of them closely when I overhauled the engine and transmission. There was no obvious signs of wear. Can the parts you described be replaced? Do on-line vendors sell them?
