I have a '49 half-ton, with a late model 235 engine, and original stomp starter converted to 12 volts. Occaisionally, when I stomp on it to start, I get an awful grinding/screeching noise which I assume is the starter gear not engaging the flywheel properly. If I wait a couple seconds and try it again, the starter engages correctly and the engine fires right up. I can think of a couple possible explanations:
A) All Stovebolts do this. It's part of the fun.
B) Something is worn out and needs to be replaced
C) I'm either stomping too hard or not hard enough, and this is causing the starter motor to energize before engaging the flywheel.
Thoughts? It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but it sure scares the people around me.
