Scratch your heads on this one. I talked John and Peggy out of their 48 short dump. While moving it and other vehicles to fit everything in the garage I raised the Dump a little to see how well it worked. It started up immediately so I stopped it now it won't come down. I pulled the lever back to raise it and shoved lever forward to drop I thought but it stayed in position. Off to work this evening so likely won't get to your answers till late in week.

Could be (a)the linkage adjustment on the valve, (b)dirt or foreign matter in the oil sticking in the valve, (c)rust on the cylinder rod, (D)rusted or stuck piston rings/seal, or (d) even stuck hinges but that is remore. However I have seen that before. I'm guessing that this is an old twin arm underbody type hoist and not a later style scissors type. I would advise carefully inspecting it w/o getting under it for anything obvious and if not found then I'd drive forward and try a panic stop with the valve in the lowered position.
Try this first and if it still doesn't work then contact me privately and we'll take it from there.

..... please please be careful. I lost a dear family friend a few years go while he was messing with the dump bed. I don't think I have to tell you what happened. Please, be careful.

I had the same problem with my 56 dump. I cleaned the piston assembly with degreaser and blew all the grime away and now it works fine. I still have to fabricate linkage to cotrol it from the cab.

Absolutely be careful! Can't say that enough!

As Dave mentioned, if the linkage needs adjustment you may be able to get at it from under the truck. (On the ground, under the truck, not under the raised bed!!) Have someone in the cab move the lever, while you watch from the bottom. You might be able to spot what the problem is.

Again...be careful!

Thanks for the replies. Will proably try to check things tommorrow. Dave I will have to study the setup to see which of the set up you describe it has. Right now all I'm sure of is it's single ram.

I'm still puzzled over that. When we had it running a year ago at the Homecoming, the bed raised and lowered just fine. I only did it once, and it was the first time in about 20 years the hydraulics had been worked, so who knows...

Did I remember the put the 5 gallon pail of hydraulic fluid in the truck?? If not, it's still here and I'll give it to you next time we meet up.

r,
John

Unless you heaved it over the side into bed no hydrualic fluid. The bed eased back down during the week,no visible leaks. Fuelpump seems to be fine ran new fuel line from carb to pump and pump to portable tank. broke the vacuum advance line still have to replace that . snaping and poping thru carburatrer got rebuild kit and going to play with timing also and check for bent push rods. Did get everything including daily driver in garage

Finally got it figured out. leave the lever in the raise position and disengage pto and bed drops. shove lever forward disengage pto and bed stays in place until it leaks down. Hauled yard debris today, got stuck an used the 54 to winch it out a good day.

Something is really wrong with what you've described. Disengaging the PTO could be as simple as pushing the clutch in but that would have no effect on the directional valve. Sounds like you may have a check valve missing or leaking badly. Something os amiss.

Doggone Dave, here i thought I had it figured out. There are no puddles under the truck as of yesterday. So back to the drawing board. The bed raises fairly quick.
