Ok I have tried to get this machine cranked but no go.
Wires in order
Dizzy pointed right
rotor pointed right
valves adjusted initially on this rebuild.

PROBLEM
backfires thru carb or out exhaust but will not start.
I tried to move arond the dizzy in most spots but still backfire after acouple of cranks.
Any suggestions?

Your distributor is probably 180 degrees off. Need to check to see that it is firing on the compression stroke instead of the exhaust stroke.

Sounds like the dist. is 180 degrees off. Make shure #1 cyl is on comp. strike & rotor is pointing to #1 term in cap.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Did you pull the distributor out?

My money is on 180* out. Common mistake. The dingalings on American Hotrod make it every time they put an engine in and Boyd has to figure it out for them wink

Like everyone else, I agree with the distributor being 180 out. I used to do that almost evey time until I started insuring that #1 was on the compression stroke when installing the dist.

Here's how I do it now: I turn the motor over with a socket wrench on the crank snout bolt and all the plugs pulled out. (You can also do this with a remote start button.) As the timing mark comes up to the indicator, I put a finger over the #1 spark plug hole. If I feel air being forced out past my finger, it's on the compression stroke. If not, I keep turning it over until I feel the compression.

With the timing mark lined up to TDC on the indicator, I position the distributor so that the rotor points to the location of the #1 spark plug wire. Then I stab the distributor into mesh with the gear on the cam. It will probably be necessary to align the oil pump gear with a long screwdriver to where it will mesh with the slot on the end of the dist. It might take a few tries, but it'll get there eventually. Then you can fire it up and set the timing with a light.
