I've just had a stock 283 rebuilt w/ larger valves and an R/V cam. What manifold and carb will work good on this engine. Also, I need to find a good manifold and carb for sale. I want to go w/ a 4 barrel setup.

Almost any intake from weind or edelbrock will work.

Heck Even a nice painted up Cast iron 4 barrel Stocker and a Good Q jet will Work just fine.

Dont over carb the Engine To many Cfm,s 600 CFM Is lots for that engine Personally A good Running Quadrajet Is all you need and a Nice alumin Edelbrock performer intake A 600 holly Is also a nice carb for the unit.

Depending on the 283 engine you have, if you go with an after market intake, you should pay attention that the intake ports are not bigger than the head ports. If so hog out the head intakes so there is no turbulance. It's also a good time to mill a small groove (small !) in the distributor housing sealing the oil chamber to get some oil down into the oil starved rear cam.

That's a good point you brought out about matching the ports. What's this about a groove in the distributor housing to oil the cam rear lobe? Did I get that right?

Get a dual plane manifold. For a carb I have been wondering about the Holley Avenger 570 cfm. They make a 470 cfm too which would work too. Anybody have any experience with those carbs? They seem to be popular.

You may have to get valve covers too if your oil fill is in the intake originally,

FYI - Edelbrock now produces the #2703 manifold with the oil fill tube included.

The 7101 Performer RPM manifold has a blanked off provision for the oil fill, but this might be a bit much for a mild 283. This is the manifold I'm running on my 350 with the oil fill.

I've been using the 600 cfm manual choke model for over 20 years and find them reliable, easy to tune and rebuild.

No. the groove is to oil the cam gear driving the distrubutor. Take a look at the distrubutor shaft. about 3/4 the way down there are two bearihg surfaces with a galley for oil in the middle. ON the bottom bearing surface, take a dremel tool and mill about a .035" grove from top to bottom. That wil leave some oil to drip on the cam gear. That little tid bid was included in all crane cam kits when they were in business. Works for me.

Padresag. You are thinking about the small flat that was milled into the rear bearing of the cam shaft for intermittent oiling to the rockers. Me and other hot rodders of the day found that out when we put 283 F.I. solid lifter cams with no milled flat into our 265's. Opps. That ended with the 283 when GM changed the oil passages.

right, but as years go by and memories perhaps alter, I didn't know whether or not someone was reminiscing
