can anyone give me information on how to get a title for a 1953 chevy pickup 3100 i bought in georgia all i have is a bill of sale and the original motor has been change it does have the serial number plate on the left door jamb. isi need and how do i go about applying for a title ?please be specific as im am new to this. i would really like to get this taken care of before i put any money into this project.any help would be great.i bought the truck in GA but i live in SC.Thanks for your help

Your right. Don't spend a dollar on it until you have a title in your hand.
When you bring a vehicle here from out of state you have to let the highway dept verify the info on the title before you can get on in your name. Most of the time folks either drive, or pull the vehicle to the Highway Dept and let them check.
BUT, as has been my case on TWO seperate ocassions I could NOT take my vehicle to them.
So, I had to go to the Highway Dept. and they will set up an appt time/day for someone to come to your house. This was done on my last vehicle (2005) but I was lucky. The original engine was still in the truck so the number on the title matched the number on the engine. (my panel had come from Florida) The guy then filled out a little slip of paper and I took it to the highway dept and did the transfer.

Now, can you get the previous owner to get a copy of the GA. title?? If so that would be nice and you could also see if the old engine # is on the Ga. Title. IF the old engine # is not on the title it will make things a lot simpler.
If you cannot get a duplicate Ga. title then personally go to the highway dept and ask what you need to do.
At most of the highway depts here in my area, they have someone that sits at the door when you come in to help answer questions and give you the correct forms and tell you what to do. They have always been helpful to me..... Just remember to be nice and innocent looking when you go in, talking about how your going to resurrect and old piece of Americana.

NOW..since your from S.C. just where are you from. If you live close to me give me a call. I know someone that "might" be able to help or tell you just what to do...but give the Highway dept a try first.

Welcome to the 'Bolt.

If all GA. has for older vehicles is a bill of sale..meaning they did not issue a title for the older vehicle you have, then just take the bill of sale to your local highway dept. tag/title office and you are good to go. Call the GA. tag/title office or check their website under a FAQS section if possible to confirm whether or not they issue a title for that year.

I am pretty sure Ga is a no title state for that year butt what about the vin the original motor is no longer in the truck so all i have is the serial number on the door jamb which is what the bill of sale has in the vin location is this still going to be ok?

....as we mentioned about checking in the DOT office you can also pickup the form you fill out for the transfer. Just answer the questions on the form. If there is something you need then as while there.

From your last post above you say "..the serial # on the DOOR JAM is what the bill of sale had in the VIN location".... then your good to go. Just take the Bill of Sale down to the DOT, fill out the transfer/new title form and pay the lady. The title will be here in about 10 days or less.

Since its out of state I think they will still want to actually see it. As I posted earlier if you can't drive it to the DMV they qill send a guy/gal out to check it and give you a slip of paper to turn in with the transfer.

well just got back from the dnv and they said they could not transfer the truck over to me without the registration card signed over to me from the last person that had it registered who ever that might be i nor the guy i bought it from have a clue to who the last regisered owmer was. should i try just try to get a bonded title for it or is there some way i can get this registration card? I dont even know where to start.

I know what I would do, but maybe wouldn't fly over there. I had a very similar problem several years ago. I signed it myself and went to a DMV where I know the person quite well. He said those papers just get filed and forgotten, worked for me and I got my title cleared.

John, I'm from Arkansas and they have a section just for Antique vehicles. All they require is a bill-of-sale signed by the seller a vin# and current insurance. The DMV will then issue a Antique title to the truck. There is one stipulation, you can't haul anything in the bed unless it's bolted down and you can't pull anything. I would check with the local DMV and see if they have a program like this.

I dont have a registration card for the truck for him to sign. is this just a form i can get from the dmv or do i need the one that was issued to the truck?

With all due respect, these are the questions you need to be asking the DMV, not us. As mentioned before, every state is different.

tryied that . asked them how to go about getting it and they keep telling me to contact the person i bought the truck from which i did and he never had it registered. I told the dmv this and all they said is Im sorry butt we have tohave the registration card. i called sc Mvd they said call ga dmv to see who the last registered owner was and they said they could not release this information and that their records did not go back that far.So if i cant get this information how am i suposed to submit it? I am just trying to get the help of the stovebolters that may know a little more about the situation than i do so im not wasting my time running around getting nothing acomplished.

That's why I say you will have to do a title search. After reading your original post I see the truck came from Georgia. Try this Georgia DMV website. They may be able to help in getting a title for abandoned vehicle or something like it.

After reading further on Georgias website I see that pre-1962 vehicles do not need a title and will not be issued a title. I would think a bill-of-sale from somebody in Ga. should satisfy the requirements of ownership in any other state.

Changed my mind iwill not give up on this truck it took me 6 months to find it and I will get a title somehow somewhere!

when i went to the dmv they agreed that the truck was not issued atitle butt i still had to have the registration card signed over to me.

Don't give up. Go up the ladder at the DMV talking to supervisors and most importantly stay calm and quiet while talking, there will be somebody in the chain of command that understands. If that fails (I doubt it will) talk to a local used car dealer and see if they can help you. Might cost you a few bucks but would be worth it.

ga says i have to be a resident of ga to register the truck if this wernt true i would just go to ga and registerit in my hame and then to sc and register it and apply for title. I thought you could apply for a non resident does any body know anything about this?

really didht want a salvage title but this might be my only option.

john, we're learning a thing or two together here. the registration card is the one S.C. gives you when you get your tag. It shows the pertinent info about the vehicle and tag # and expiraton dates. If Georgia had a registration card the prevous owner should give it to you.......

you need to talk to someone else at the DMV and ask more questions and explain the senario to the "aupervisor". I have heard of S.C., in some cases, using a Notarized letter for documentation but most "window clerks" probably know little about this.
I know someone "who knows someone" so let me see what I can find out and I'll get back to you.

John, sorry to hear about your Mom, try someone a little higher up on the food chain with the DMV. Be nice but persistant in that GA. does not have a title for this age vehicle. State that no regristration card exhists as it was not on the road or registered by the last known owner. Most important, don't give up....if some one you are talking to doesn't have the authority to say "yes"...then ask to be sent to someone who does. A notorized bill of sale using the S.C. dmv form worked for me.

Don't give up...stay after it and push it to Columbia if necessary.

BTW.........Leo is right, Alvin is the man.....he knows these trucks front, back, sideways and anything in between

My family and I live in SC and have been into old cars / trucks for 30+ years. There are only a couple ways we have ever gotten a title. One was by having a friend in Alabama get a title there on a car, then transfer it to us. We've tracked car after car to dead ends. I don't know why they're so crazy here. There are also title services that are a little shady. I know they advertise in the old car publications. Somehow they provide something like a signed registration card from 1975. They probably don't even know when the car was last registered, but neither will the SCDMV if the car came from GA. My brother titled a GTO this way about five years ago. We've been through this time and time again. The thing is, the only person who ever sees it is the clerk who doesn't have a clue. If it says what it's supposed to say, she'll stick it in the file and you're out the door.

called ga dmv again told them my situation and all they would say is im sorry but we cant release that information. (last registered owner)i hope i can get a rebuild title.
