But, if the "stud" is bradded on the back side you will have to grind it off. Does your new handle have a hole through it?? If so you may have to go the nut/bolt route..... If so I think you can just cut off the old knobs flush with the crank arm using a cutoff wheel on a dremel . Then you should be able to use a punch and tap it out from the front side to the back. Be sure to support the back side of the crank arm.
It's been awhile but I think this is the way I did mine.
