What is a good shifter to use with my Saginaw 4 speed? I paid big bucks for a Hurst & it seems like a piece of junk. It has no positive feel to it. It wants to go from 1st. to 4th instead of 2nd. I have all the rods adjusted right.

Does anybody else make a "4spd" shifter? I've had Mr Gasket on a 3spd. I thought the idea of the shift pattern was designed so that you had to hold it inline for 1st & 2nd while the spring load lined of 3 & 4? I think Hurst does have the good,$ better,$$ & best $$$.

If you got the Hurst Indy, I've never seen one that was any good, 3 0r 4 speed. Have you checked with Patricks? They've got a shifter for the Saginaw that's specifically for use in the AD and TF trucks.
BTW, Hurst and Mr.Gasket are the same company, Mr. Gasket bought out Hurst some time ago, mid-'80s, I think.

Check with B&M, they make good stuff. Don't know if Lokar makes what you want but worth checking into, maybe,

Either way, I'm using a Hurst in my '58 with good luck so far. I don't have the part number written down, but if yours mounts to the transmission like this, or if you're interested I'll be glad to get it for you.

Used a Hurst up until I went with the T-5 trany, but bought it 20 years ago was really stout. Today's are probably made in Pakistan!

Looks like we're both right. From what I could find, B&M bought Hurst from Mr. Gasket.
I might be mistaken, but I thought Lokar only did automatic shifters.

I have bought a half a dozen Hurst shifters that were 40 year old NOS on eBay, and of course they still fell like a Hurst. I even think a used 40 year old Hurst is better than what is being built now.

I've had no problems with Hurst shifters, but mine may be older models.

The quality got pretty sloppy (pun intended) during the Mr. Gasket years. Most of them feel worn out right out of the box. I've driven a few trucks with the Indy Shifter, they were bad enough that I would never suggest them.

I have a Hurst 3 speed shifter on my 65 galaxie and its not that great and looks cheesey as the Mr Gasket versions,when it goes to a 4 speed I have a old Hurst shifter that will be going on. I got the cheesey version off ebay thinking it was a good one but it was cheap and better then on the column.

I learned a couple things years ago with aftermarket shifters. I always would use the metal bushings in the shift arms, both shifter end and transmission end. The nylon bushings are soft and add to the slop factor. I also always used a 1/4" (guess) drill bit to adjust the shifter arms. Put the transmission in neutral have the arms of the transmission and shifter in neutral, then slide the bit in to lock shifter in place. Then adjust each rod to the correct length. Then if your shifter has the 3/8 bolts with the lock nuts to limit the travel make sure you adjust them to make sure you are engaging each gear all the way. The last thing is to make sure the shifter assembly stays clean and lubed, it makes a big difference.

Thanks for the replies. It is the Indy shifter. It looks like the one in Avette's photo but doesn't have the stops. I think I will e-mail or call Hurst & see what they say. George

That isn't good. I'd ask them about that when you call.

Its possible that the end plates are threaded for the stops. You can get some 3/8 bolts and put a nut on them and go ahead and adjust things up.

I have nobody to blame but myself. I should have asked first before I bought it. I could have put in a T-5 for about the same money.

Patrick's is made by Hurst, I am fairly certain. I didn't hear that people were having problems with them feeling sloppy though. I am not sure if his is built, or speced differently though.

Update. I called Hurst & they said that is the cheaper line & just the way it is. I called Jed's & after a long lecture on how to drive a manual trans. (I've been driving them for 60 years, everything from Semi's to muscle cars to VW's) He said to send it bsck. I sent it back to them & am going to put a T-5 in it.
