A friend of mine did me a "favor" today and removed the head from my 216 to check the head gasket. I noticed he tossed the push rods in the valve cover. Usually when I do this I poke them into a cardboard box and label them so I can put them back with thier respective valve. Guess I wont be doing that this time. My question is...will this really matter when I put this thing back together? Thanks

It's usually good to keep the pushrods matched to the components at each end of 'em,mainly because they wear a pattern to each other, and swapping them around could cause accelerated wear while they develop a new pattern. I suspect in this case the only problem is likely to be that you'll have to adjust your valves a couple more times to compensate for the extra wear. I don't think I'd worry too much about it.

When you get it back together and running watch the pushrods and see if they're turning. If they are rotating slowly they are happy and perfectly concentric. Ones that don't want to turn will develop a "rut". Swap around the stiff ones and polish the ends of a few if you have to to get them all moving.

Maybe he's going to hit you up for a new set of rods and rockers,
