Where do you get this stuff? I tried all the FLAPS in town as well as the hardware stores.

depends on just what you want .... phosphoric acid, a rust remover, may be available from a FLAPS that has a good range of bodyshop/paint supplies .... naval jelly should be available many places .... check CanadianTire, they should have something in the way of rust converters .... or if you're dealing with small parts, you could use the electrolytic setup found here

I bought some "Evaporust" and was skeptical. My results turned out great! I was impressed and will continue to use it. It is rather expensive though. 5 gallons cost around $100.

Thanks. For now I'm trying the electrolysis method, it may be tedious for small stuff, but things are bubbling out in the garage.

Hardware stores and home improvement stores both carry phosphoric acid here. Do y'all have Home Depot or Lowe's up there in the north country?

Yeah, my daughter works at Lowes. I still prefer the acid bath because I can just throw a bunch of small parts in at once.

Just to let you know, dont use the electrolytic method in an enclosed space. You mentioned in a garage. Hydrogen gas is released (the little bubbles) as the oxygen molecules are transfered between pieces removing the oxidized iron in the process. Theres a serious potential for causing an explosion if the hydrogen has a spark. Just moving the battery charger clamp can create a spark.

I use a 1:20 mixture of muriatic acid and water. Then rinse with soda ash and water in the garden sprayer to neutralize.

I soak parts in vinegar a few days (in the summer) and even the thickest rust just falls off in sheets. Pour several gallons in a large tupperware container and check it out.

I'll try the vinegar method, I already use it to remove lime scale from the coffee maker.

I used B&G Rust Remover. I think it is concentrated Phosphoric acid. It is sold in gallon jugs and is very effective. The supplier that I used is "Automotive Restoration Supplies", with addresses in St. Catherines and Niagara Falls. Phone numbers are 905 934 7140 and 905 892 3341.

Its Ospho

I bought some locally, forget what I paid, but have not used it yet. It is alot less expensive than Picklex or the paint mfg's metal treatments and I bet its all pretty much the same stuff.
