What do you think? Magnaflow or Flowmaster exhaust? How about copies? Got a 350 with hooker shorties. Dual aluminized 2 1/2" front to back exhaust dropping out behind the fenders.

Hi Tomy2... I'm not sure about the Magnaflow mufflers but try this Click on the muffler and you'll see a link to allow you to hear each individual one ! Kinda neat!
I hope this helps

For a V8 I liked flowmaster mufflers.

For my diesel I just bought a 5" Magnaflow stainless steel one. It cost less than the regular steel 5" mufflers from the other folks and it even has a lifetime guaranty. We'll find out what it sounds like in a few weeks..

IMO, it would be the Flowmaster.

I have the flowmaster standard 40 series 2.5 duals going out the back with stainless 3in tips. I love the sound, sometimes alittle to much.

Start with the 40's, they're shorter. If they are too loud you can then go to the longer 50's series without much effort. I prefer 40's with full length tail pipes myself,
Scott

Yup, changing from 40's to 50's is easy. just cough up $150.
I am running the 40's and satisfied with the sound, But I'm certain there other mufflers that sound as good for less $

By to much I mean I tend to get on it from stop lights and such.
The 3in dia, 18in long tips act like megaphones and really enhance the sound.

I worry that you really don't know what they will sound like until you buy them and crank them up. I want something with a low rumble that will allow me to carry on a conversation while running at 70 mph on the highway. Yeah you can get the recordings to listen to line Jock said but I can't believe the sound would be much like the real muffler coming through your computer speakers.
What I would really like is to recreate the sound I had in my 1969 Buick Skylark GS.

i put flowmastes on my 54/3100/235 a month a go and like them very much. i even believe that i got more power also. as far as gas mileage it is hard to tell it is very erratic. btw ihave duals. i bought mine at advance auto and they gave me a 10% discount when i mentioned oriellys across the street. now i work at auto zone. ron

Lets face it FM series 40 are too loud for anything but a short cruise. You can not carry on a unstrained conversation.

I had Flowmaster 40's on my 5.9 Grand Cherokee for about 4 years - sounded good but definitely had a resonance at highway speeds. I switched over to Magnaflows - have a more " muscular " sound in my opinion - still a bit loud on Highway but sound sweet to me.

Hey Jock Nice site. I kinda got an Idea of the sound. I am going to use 2 1/2". Might look into a copy version. Save some cash. Same sound hopefully.

WOW, you better find a better dealer. Besides, you can always find another vehicle to put the 40's on.

The reason I said it the way I did was meant that the system wouldn't have to be spliced, hacked, butchered or changed. Just need to cut about 3-4 inches out to fit the 50's in,
Scott

It all depends on what sound you are after.I like them both. The Flowmasters, have a deep rumbling sound ,whereras the Magnaflows are more raspier, they sound more like the old glasspacks.I have Flowmasters on my 55 with a 350 engine, and blockhugger headers and it sounds like a big block.I had a 72 with Magnaflows and when I stood on it,(accelerated) It really sounded off. From my experience, they are both quality mufflers.

I've really come to dislike the sound of Flowmasters. I listened to the clips for the 40 and 50 series, couldn't tell the difference, still sound tinny. If you want it loud, run straight pipes. Full length, small diameter, mild at idle, rap out good at rpm. If the Magnaflows are raspier, I may look into a set for my street/strip car. I have old school 2 chambers on it and hate the sound. Anybody want to trade?

Devin

I'm running 30 inch Smithys on my 54 Belair. Nice mellow sound.
And in expensive.

31,32,33 back in the old days Smithys were one of the better glasspack mufflers,I always preferred the Hollywood Belonds. But in all fairness all of the glasspacks sounded pretty much the same. Glasspacks are still available today at regular exhaust shops.

Neither. They are too noisey & don't sound good. It gets irritating after the first 2 days. I use 30 in. glasspacks like 31,2,3. or stock mufflers.

On my trucks I like the extra noise created by non stock mufflers. On your 30 inch glasspacks they will also get loud once they get carboned up,and will sound just about like straight pipes.

When Tony built Deerslayer, he built his own header which dumps into a 3" collector and a single Super 40 Flowmaster. A short 3" tailpipe dumps out in front of the driver side rear wheel. I luv it. People on the sidewalk turn about to see what's coming and it echos nicely on the condo canyon walls going down A-1-A. Shows off the lumpy cam at stoplights. There's a resonnance at 2K rpm but that's not too difficult to avoid.
