Its been a while since I had one of the door latches apart but I think it was relatively simple if I remember correctly. BUT sometimes the problem is not the spring but the "square" hole the handle fits in gets "rounded" out some.
If the square hole is the problem I have read over the years that some guys "weld" the holes up some and then file them back out. One guy put his handle in a vice, heated it up and BENT the handle. Don't be afraid to tackle it. I hate taking it out more than I do working on them!! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 1,820 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 1,820 | That's the way I did mine, Alvin, Bill, Trev and Tiny. I heated the square shaft that goes through the hole in the latch and bent it so the "droop" is gone. It worked great! And Alvin is right. The spring won't do any good if the square hole in the latch is worn or if the shaft on the handle is worn. That is usually the problem, consequently that spring cannot correct the wearing. Joe

I do remember that the problem wasnt the wear factor, but that so much gunk had built up in the latch mechanism that it wouldnt return properly. I washed and scrubbed it up with wd-40 then greased all the moving parts and they now work great.
Can you take a picture of the mechanism? It would probably refresh my memory.
