I would have thought the engine would need the mass or weight of a conventional flywheel, or of a flex plate/torque converter combination to idle properly. Maybe you don't idle an engine on a test stand.

Those clutches are about 6 inches in diameter. I would assume an engine with a stock camshaft would not like to slow idle with only a flex plate, but above 1,500 RPM or so it should run OK.

There is not resistance for it to torque up against. I have run a bunch of Pontiacs on a stand I built, they dodn't even vibrate around. Make sure you have a fan on the radiator or the engine fan pulling air, they get hot pretty fast and require more air flow then you think. Looks good for a test run with just a flexplate. This an '86 carburated 350 so should be an easy setup.
