Did a mock up of what louvers on the side of my 54 hood would look like. Talking with the rod shop that will do the work, getting the alignment/positioning correct will be challenging but the location I show in in the attached pics is close to what I think will work well.

The mock up only shows nine louvers but the total count would be closer to 12-14.

What do you think of the look? Remember this forum is the Hot Rod hang out so if you are against body mods on these truck you may have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Hmmmmmm. Maybe if you had a picture showing more of the truck? I can't seem to form an opinion based on just that picture. I do, however, have very little doubt that if it's done right, it will look good.

I like the louver look. If you end up with more than the 9 showing in the picture I think it will look better. Kinda evens things out. I think they have to be off centered to look right also. Good luck and have fun. Your truck looks great!

Louvers look pretty good, but I can tell you from experience they are a real pain in the a$$ to keep your engine clean. I had a 1952 Chevy Bel Air hardtop with a whole bunch (I forgot how many) of them. When I washed it the engine would get soaked, sometimes even wouldn't start because of a wet distributor.

The vertical on the hood with horizontal on the cab might look a little odd, but it's your money.

"Horizontal on the Cab" Who would put louvers on the cab? The plan is for a single row of slats on the sides of the hood only.

The comment about water getting on the engine is valid but I think with only one row on the sides there should not be too much of a problem. I have some stainless mesh that will be installed behind the louvers to keep bugs out.

If I wanted to have them on the cab I would not have shaved them off to begin with but then you are not that observate to begin with so you are forgiven.

OK here's my thought, You have went through a lot of work and have a great looking truck that anyone would be proud to drive down the street. You kept it with the smooth appearance which i really love. Now the addition would make it stand out in the crowd but it already does that. Would you make the louvers all the same size or taper them down after about half way going to the back? My opinion would be to leave it as is. But its your truck and your choose, What ever you decide it still is a great looking ride.

It's your money - spend it how you wish. I don't need input in the "turnip patch". Apparently money gives you an excuse for being rude. So - I am glad I am poor and kind. You asked for input. I put the last issue behind us, and gave you an honest answer with the picture you provided. I forgive your ignorance, but not your attitude. Are we supposed to research every detail of a person's truck before replying?

As to the other comment - you can dish it out, but you can't take it?

Dakota - I have not pulled the trigger on the carpet as yet. Been working the wiring and deciding on the gauges. One concern I have on that carpet though is that being marine grade it has a rubber backing which may trap moisture under the carpet should any get there. I will need to discuss this with the shop I select to do the seat cover. If it is not needed I will certainly get it back to Ray. Hope you are thawing out up there.

As to the louvers, the shop only has one size die and that is 3 inch. I think a tapered size from say 4 inch down to the 3 inch size shown in the picture would work well. I have my own concerns on the louvers and think the truck would look good either way. The main problem is trying to establish a reference point on the inside of the hood as the puover are punched from that side. I have an extra hood which has too many issues to use which I will use as a test case. If that does not work out well I will pass on punching this hood and get this truck done.

It doesn't quite sing for me. It's a matter of personal preference though. It's your truck, so do what you like. It might grow on me!

I wouldn't kick it out of the garage for eating crackers.

Good points indeed and that is why I have done the truck as I want to this point however this mod finds me on the fence. I was hoping to get input from others who have done louvers as to any negatives associated with them as well as getting a perspective on what the hot rod contingent here on the bolt thinks of the visual impact. I have received worthy opinions from some and other opinions that...well enough said.

The key comments have focused on the location of the louvers with several saying they need to start further back on the hood to which I agree but also have to work around the rear hood bracing.

Yeah, (I think you're going to love it). I've been mulling over doing the same thing only farther back (as you said the positioning would be) doing six a side for a Stovebolt Six....I guess you could do eight for an 'Excellent Eight'.

thanks for the info, I'm a ways away from making any decisions on louvers. I just picked up my '56 here in Houston, it was a
'rod project that got started but is no where near completion. I have all the sheet metal in the garage and will be trailering the frame/cab home soon. I moved down to Houston about a year 1/2 ago from the Boston area and since I'm in TX, I need a PU, right? So why not go w/something stylish. Mine is a big window LWB with a MII front end and a fresh 327 so it looks to be a good place to start. I'm a bigger fan of the SWB, so I'll probably be looking to cut the frame down, etc. Love the board so far, can't wait to start bruising my knuckles....
