For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 10 | I have a 1958 viking with a 16 foot flat bed. I farm and ranch for a living and thought it would be nice for my kids to see how they used to haul cattle. I would like to build a cattle rack for my truck, but would like to see pictures of how it should look. Does anybody have drawings, plans or pictures. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 85 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 85 | It seems like I saw an old cattle truck the other day, I will keep my eyes open during my travels and see if I can spot it again... What part of Texas are you in? Awesome! I'm in San Antonio, but a trucker so I go around all over... Looks like I am likely to be making a delivery in Waxahachie next week some time... I think the cattle truck that I am thinking of is down near Edinburg (in the valley)... i will have a buddy of mine down there keep his eyes open too... Good luck with it! That's a good example of the stake body sides they used to use. Before my 59 model 3800 bed deteriorated to a pile of rust, it had an original-equipment set of stake sides on it. Long gone now, though! Jerry

Nearly the same thing except the lower 40" is solid. See STAKE BODY post of a couple of days ago. I listed a supplier of body parts for stake posts, etc that you can use. Most of the bodies were steel posts by 58' so it would be pretty authentic looking if you have oak slats made. You can rivet them or use carriage bolts and recess the nuts & washers. The gate is easily made from formed channel and a loose fitting slide frame with a rope and pulley. It has a combination grain and cattle bed. The lower half is solid so the grain doesn't spill out and the cattle can't see daylight and try to escape. The slatted sides fold up so the cattle won't try to jump for it either. The cattle part is made of 1x4's; and the spacing between them is also about 3 1/2 inches (or about the same as the width of the board). Hope this helps. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 10 | Thanks Mike left message on the freebies for info.
