The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Newbie saying "hi!"

Hello,

I just wanted to say hi. As of Jan. 18 I bought my first 'bolt, a 1958 C60 (6400H). To make what I am sure to be a long story short for now, I live in Southeast Missouri (Desloge) and bought the truck over the internet at a farm auction in middle Kansas. I have had it taken to a shop near Wichata to be gotten into a safe and reliable condition to drive about 500 miles home. For right now I have one quick guestion. The guy working on it says it has no heater and came from the factory that way. Was a heater an option on these trucks? Thanks for your help!

When will you be driving your truck home? I live south east of Columbia Mo. If you have any trouble in my area, Give me a call, I'm in the phone book.
Not sure about the heater question, but I think it may have been an option.
Somebody else here will have the answer.

Thanks for the offer of help! I certainly appreciate it! I plan on bringing the truck home the first weekend in March. If all goes well I am going to stop by my cousin's in Knob Noster MO after I pick it up on Saturday and then come on home with it sunday (said with fingers crossed). I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!

Dale -- heaters are for sissies!! Just pull the floor mat up and let the heat from the exhaust and engine come up through the floor board to keep you toasty! It works on our trucks in the winter!

Peg and I rode over to our daughter's house Christmas Eve in the '49 -- it was about 15 to 20 degrees out and we were comfortable in the truck. Peg had a blanket, though...

Have a fun trip! You'll be having so much fun, you won't be cold!

Heaters were a dealer installed option in those days. They could also be purchased cheaper from places like Sears, Western Auto and the like.

I agree heaters are for sissies! I told the wife, "We don need no stinken' heater!!

Actually, I am hopeing that I don't see any ground when I sit in the truck. I haven't actually seen the truck yet. I told the shop working on it to make it safe and reliable to make a 500 mile trip home. So far has completely redid the brakes. Replaced the radiator, carb and kingpins and wheel bearings. He says he has all the lights working and that it is a pretty solid truck and that it runs good. I got my fingers crossed. This is got to be one of the craziest thing I ever done! I think it has something to do with turning 50 awhile back and I have always loved the looks of the 58/59 big chevy trucks. So far in a strange way that I can't explain this has been a blast and I can't hardly wait to go get it and make the trip home.

I really appreciate this forum and web site. I have already learned more than I thought there was to know about these big bolts.

Hi everybody,

Went out to Mulvane Kansas on March 1 and picked up my truck, a 1958 Chevy 6400. Got my first look at it and was a tad bit disapointed. But as I said in a previous post it was to be fit to make a 500 mile trip back home to southeast Missouri. So as not to create unbearable suspence..................it did make it!

At one point I was stopped along side a rode trying to figger out which way to go and a policeman pulled up behind me. Oh oh I says to meself, this may be trouble! The Cop asked if I was overheated. I said no and explained the situaion. He looked at me and he looked at the truck then he looked back at me and back at the truck again. It was written all over his face what he was thinking. He was thinking "I ain't getting involved with this! This would be waaaaay too much paperwork!" So he wished me luck and sent me on my way. Phew!!!

Anyway the whole trip was actually pretty uneventful. But I have to be honest, the combination of me being by myself, not having alot of faith in the work done on the truck, a completely rotten exhaust system and me not have driven a truck like this for about 30 years made me pretty nervous and it wasn't just a plesant ride in the country. But on the up side I figger it it will make it 500 miles or so that pretty good. Since then I've had an exhaust put on it and the motor (a 327 I think) sounds good. Sorry for the delay in getting this little story to you all but things have been pretty busy. And boy, do I have questions!!!

I am going to try and put a link to some pictures of the truck here but I am not sure I understand all I know about doing that.

Time and effort put in to a detailed story and pictorial of your efforts will not only bring the members of this web site joy it will prove most valuable to you for building your truck. The better you document the journey through your work the more it will help you be organized, it will help you remember how things go back together, with keeping a budget, as motivation, and it will make us smile. Again welcome aboard and good luck on your endeavor.

You need to write up the story of the trip and submit it as a Stovebolt Saga . I love reading of a great adventure almost as much as I like participating in them.

Truck looks great, I am partial to the task force trucks! Truck looks like one that was on e-bay recently!

No it wasn't on ebay. I bought it at a farm auction in Belle Plain Kansas for $1150. "there ain't nothing wrong with it that a few million dollars won't fix"! Actually it has a 327 in it that isn't original but it sounds really good.

Harrydale do you have a part number for those kingpins? I hve a 58 Viking c60 also and I need the part numbers.
