For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 42 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 42 | This may be offensive ? I want to purchase a reproduction chassis for my son. The builder suggested a Fxxd rearend, with no gear or bearings. I am totally ignorant to anything that is stamped Fxxd, and prejudiced. What G.M differential combination would be an alternative ? 33 Chev coupe, 327, and 66 powerglide, which he may change. I seek help as he lives near Seattle, this is the only help I can offer. Thanks Guys

Waht the builder is trying to sell you on, though, is an installed bare housing, you'll have to get you're own 3rd member for it. Not really a problem, as that diff is used in almost all customs/hot rods/race cars/every Nascar racer. Unless you have the equipment to do the setup, I'd suggest getting a pre-assembled 3rd member with whatever gear you want to run. I'd also advise a TH700R4 if the car is going to be used on the street, you won't be happy with the 'Glide. One more thing, depending on what front suspension is being used, you'll want to specify that you have matching front and rear bolt patterns on the hubs, not really a big deal. Most likely, the choice will be 5 x 4 1/2", which is the common ford/MoPar pattern. That'll give the widest choice of wheels.

The 9" ford is your best bet though. Scribner Welding in Kent WA. if I could find his card I would give you the number but look him up very good and reasonable at building custom rear ends. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,276 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,276 | Oh here you go I didn't know he had a web site. http://scribnerwelding.net/ | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | I would go with a Moser rear diff. You send them your measurements and what gear ratio, width and bolt pattern, brake style and they send you a diff that fits like a glove. It's a Ford 9" style but much beefier, Scott | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | I don't recal who makes it, but ther's one out called the 9+. basically, it's a ford 9" housing with Chevy 12 bolt guts. Seems that the gear from the 12 bolt is actually stronger due to the better location of the pinion in relation to the ring gear.

And 'Glides only shift once, hi gear is 1:1. However, if this car is going to see highway use and regular driving, a trans with an overdrive will be much more pleasureable at highway speeds.
