Hi. We're trying to track down a starter for our 48 GMC flatbed 1 1/2 ton pickup. We haven't seen the right one in any websites. Maybe somebody here knows where we can get one, or might have one we can take off their hands.

Hy turpentyne, I think any 6 volt Chevy or G.M.C. starter should work for you, starters are not polarity sensitive, as far as I know, hope that helps.

Check the tech tips button for more details, but 3B is right. The Delco-Remy starter motors were the same for all engines, the only difference being the number of teeth on the starter motor drive viz-a-viz the flywheel.

Certainly, '41 through 53 Chevrolets all used the same starter motor--six volt, mechanical shift.

You say you are looking on some websites. Make sure everything matches. Always check model and serial numbers whenever possible.

You also haven't told us the details. Since you have a '48 GMC ton-and-a-half flatbed, I'm going to guess that it is pretty much original--6 volt electrical system, manual transmission, mechanical-shift starter (that's the one most of the fellers here call the 'masher starter' or 'stomper starter'), etc.

Confirm whatcha got and you will get a lot of help.

ah.. yes. definitely, that's what we have. 6 volt system. foot starter, It's got a '51 248 sitting in it. the FC303 model. We're still discovering what we've got, as we go, since we just started this project a week and a half ago.

I would take it to a rebuild shop.

on a couple of starters i had luck just replacing the springloaded push button assembly on top of the starter and cleaning the contact also to get a suppositly dead starter going.

hey tupentine where in the southwest are you if you are in so cal i could recommend a good rebuilder in yermo ca he has goo rates to he also rebuilds stuff for the military

I'm in sunny Phoenix, AZ. But, this thread kinda strayed from my original question: There's no starter to rebuild. we don't have one. That's why we weren't sure exactly which we needed. I think somebody may have a rebuilt one to send me for a good price... but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

turpentyne call advanced alternator 760-243-5302 in yermo ca they might be able to help and ill look in my stash and see if i can come up with a core if the dont already have one there just outside of barstow ca on the i-15

i used a chevy 12 volt out of a 54-55 truck, when i messed mine up, works great.

have you thought about using a newer starter with the solenoid mounted on the starter or do you want to keep it original?

my dad used to own a tractor repair shop and some of the sprayers used straight 6 Chevy engines with the newer starter if you want i could find the part# of a starter that would fit

that is a good idea if your not worried about keeping it original

I probably saw one go to the scrap yard today, I know that doesn't help or even make you feel better, if I'd had time to check this posting yesterday I might have been able to snag it for you. You know the saying "Day late and a dollar short!"
