A friend of mine trades and repairs trucks, mostly semi-trucks,
but gets just about anything in his yard. With scrap metal
going for what it is, he had contracted with a scrap dealer to
remove the bent frames, wrecked cabs, etc. Sitting next to
the 'claw' was this '49 1-1/2 ton Chevy:

http://home.alltel.net/bf63349/truck49.JPG

I had seen the truck in his yard before, but I am working
on a 47 Kenworth, and didn't want another project. Later in the
day, I had to ask if he was really going to crush it, and he
admitted he was, and that it even ran well. I took pity on it,
and asked if he would sell it to me for the scrap price, so
$250 and a 3-hour labor trade later, its now mine. I even
got another door, some original clearance lights and other small
parts from another cab he was going to crush.

Cab corners have some rust down low, but thats about it. I
got in running, brakes pumped up, and the hoist works. But now
it snowed here in Nebraska, so its on hold. I need to replace
the wood on the deck, but not sure what I will do with the truck
when its done, so it might have to be sold in the spring.

Has anybody seen a bumper guard like that before? Is that
chevy or some aftermarket thing?

Love this site!
Brian

That's a Chevy bumper guard and will probably sell on Ebay for more than you have in the truck. But don't sell it.

The truck looks to be in great shape.

Nice truck. I have one of those bumper guards, it was on one of my trucks when I bought it.

Great look'in truck. You did good on that one for $250. As mentioned the Grille Guard on your truck was indeed an Accessoery Guard from G.M. They were manufactured for G.M. by, Cello Products Co.(A Division of A.S. Campbell Co.) of East Boston, Ma. They usually sell on ebay, in good condition from $150- $350. I've owned several, & still have a couple of NOS Guards like this, in my Shop. See one of mine here, http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2285554650052570246qoIngD

Yes, your truck looks great. I think we should save any and all if they are complete and decent.
Now that's a REAL truck !!

Its great that you saved that nice truck. Its depressing to think of all the great trucks out there that were not so fortunate.

Nice save! That truck looks good! That bumper guard is kind of hard to get in that nice of shape. I've been offered $350 for mine site unseen. That was several years ago.

Yes -- Good save! Hate to tell you what I paid for a '49 4400 in similar condition here on the East Coast a few years ago... We'll just say you got a *very* good deal. Thanks for saving it!
