Well, that’s what I get for wanting to share some photos with ya all. It was just what I thought it would be, a half hours worth of window after window after window of personal questions and downloads and activeX and, god knows what all, being added to my hard drive. That was the reason I didn’t want to join Webshots or Photobucket or any of the other places to archive my photos. Now on top of the 100 spamers emails I get every morning, I’ll probably have another 50 that I’ll have to throw in the garbage!

Edit: and now I’m sneakin’ up on the one full hour of messing with Webshot. Tried to go back to the forum and I have multiple widows open for the forum and nothing is responding, had to shut down and reboot. Sorry host and hostess but, Posting a photo here is much to complicated for an old f&$t like me!

Denny,

Wow, what a pain. We were wanting to get a discussion going about these photo-hosting places. Just recently, we've had a few folks come in using Google's Piscasa. I wondered how good that one is. I also notice with Webshots, I can no longer copy and paste a photo from their site. I am NOT going to download anything from them.

Let's hear from others ... is this kind of nuttyness new. Are the old accounts fairly easy.

Who do you think has the best photo hosting service?

Oh, another neat one was the Kodak one. I really liked the way theirs was laid out.

Google or Kodak, one of them allowed you to even put information with the picture, which I think is really helpful. I was thinking about doing something with one of them (big maybe) for the Kansas City pictures. That way, they could be in a slide show and I was hoping it would be easier than doing the slideshow from our software (which I am still learning).

Let me know what you all think ... and what you use ... the pros and cons.

Peg

I recently tried webshots and had an album uploaded pretty quickly after signing up...about
10-15 minutes. I don't remember answering any personal questions or anything like that. I thought it was pretty easy, and I am certainly
not a computer guru or anything. I have my email
preferences set to delete spam, so I don't know how much I am getting.

I have been using picturetrail for a couple of years and it works fine. The only gripe I have is they do not do much to improve/enhance their product or site capabilities.

Picasa worked great. I just downloaded it. Installed. Created my Album. Then moved it to the web.

Granted I already had a google account, which made it easier, but seems to be a good product.

I have been using Picasa for a couple weeks now and I really like it. I have had a Webshots account before and I agree with Peg, once it's there you can't download it to anywhere else (without an account).

I think it must be Kodak's that you can put info on the picture because (unless I just can't find the option) I don't think Picasa has that capability.

Peg - to "download" a Webshots pic ya hafta first get to the full pic by clicking on "full size " just to the right of the one yer seeing in their Flash window, then right click and save it

Webshots ain't a problem, just hafta take it slow and do it, the time is that it requires installing the app on yer puter and sometimes the net is busy - there's always CANCEL buttons, try again later! grin

I did a google search for picture hosting sites and came up with a site that has many hosting sites rated. I visited many of the sites and found it difficult to determine the features of each, so I picked one I had seen a few time that had a good rating.

I chose photobucket, it was easy to get setup on and only took a few minutes to have pictures on the web. The great thing about these photo hosts is their basic featues don't cost anything, so if you don't like the way the one you chose works, just move to another one.

Photobucket does allow notes for your pictures but the length is limited. I would like a host that provides more note length.

Same here on Webshots. The only E-mail I get from Webshots is my view counter once a week.

I don't use it that much anymore since my internet provider gives enough space to host my own pics.

The reason I chose Webshots, is that I see a lot of the other Stovebolters are using it and it looked like it was laid out pretty well. Photos generally seemed to open pretty quick and were size to look good on my screen.
The personal info I’m crabbin bout is minor, just that they wanted to know my birth date and gender and I can only think of one reason they want that, that being they are going to use it to target me for more unwanted Spam.
In all honesty, I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary since I rebooted the confuser.
Now all I need to do is try to upload some photos and see how difficult/easy that is.
I guess like the old saying goes , “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” if somebody’s gonna let me use their server space then I shouldn’t complain about their rules.

I use Yahoo! Pictures. All you do is sign up for one of their accounts for which you don't have to give much information (just a real e-mail address that they can contact you at as I recall). No downloads, unwanted background pictures, ActiveX or Java or any of the crap. I've had the Yahoo! account for about 5 or 6 years now and never had any problems or unwanted spam.

I use webshots with very little trouble. It could be easier to upload pics but it's really not too bad. I have not gotten any spam in the year I have used it.

I am not whiz at computers either.

Webshots kept freezing my computer up every time I tried using it. So I went with photobucket. Took 5 minutes to make it work. Seems to work alright.

If any of the sights ask questions just start making stuff up! I do that with everything I fill out. To many people want to much info nowadays anyways.

That what I do at Northrop Grumman "Information Technology" I have been dealing with spam,Phishing,Spyware and it is getting worse. The free sights are a pain cause the are free and the only way for them to make a buck is to get your info and sell it or banner ad. So what I use is anonproxy. It will change your IP every 10 seconds. There are alot of ways to keep that junk off your machine. Let me know if you want any help. I also have 3 servers online with 800 gig of space . good luck

I have a free flickr account. Haven't had any problems, although I noticed that they are not accepting new members, since they merged with Yahoo. I guess they figure I have something like Grandfather rights. About a week after I signed up they started making everone sign up thru Yahoo.

There are limitations unless I upgrade to a pay account, but it is OK for now.

Eventually, I want have my own web page, my ISP (cox) will host a web page at no extra charge. I just haven't spent the time to figure it out yet. If I remember correctly, it takes special soft ware to create the web page. Microsofts version I think is called "Front Page". Something that I didn't want to pay for. Kim Komando had a free program available, but I haven't had the patience or spare time to master it yet.

I, being the sysadmin at an ISP, get my web hosting for free, so I didn't bother learning about image hosts -- I have one already.

Most ISPs that aren't cheapie ones will offer a small (1-20 MB) "personal" file hosting space free of charge. The usual caveats are that you can't use it for any commercial purposes (e.g. ebay) and that it stays under a certain amount of "transfer" (bandwidth) per month. These come in both "FTP" and "Frontpage" [expectorates on floor] flavors.

I hate Frontpage with a burning passion. It has gotten better over the years, but it's still not in my good books.

But, then again, I'm a codejockey. I'm anal retentive to the point of being Obsessive Compulsive about my code being a certian way. That, and FP horks up most of my complex and cool "does stuff" code anyway.

The ONLY benefit to Frontpage is that it is the ONLY Client (that I've found) for things that use "Frontpage" access for uploads.

Cox should be able to provide you with an FTP account to upload your files. Most hosts do both.

I saw Sixty5C10 comment several entries back about captions on Picasa.
If you select an individual photo from an album, the is a small white box in the lower left hand corner. Click on that. You'll then be able to add a cation. BUT I don't know if that will be included for a posting here.

I do not like webshots myself.

I had an account with them, and they would send me annoying emails all the time telling me I had not accessed my account in X number of days and why don't I add some pictures?

I got tired of that, so I deleted everything I had in there.

Then they started emailing me that they were going to delete my user name and account. My attitude was "yay, finally!."

They did delete my account, it was gone(could not login, etc.) for the better part of a year. Then, suddenly, mysteriously I started getting emails from them again.

My account came back from the dead, and there is not an option to delete it.

Personally I think it is a way they have of padding their numbers about the number of users they have to the advertisers and/or stockholders.

The best way to upload photos would be to use your own personal webspace, of which each internet service provider provides at least 10 megabytes of webspace, usually per email address. The broadband accounts like DSL and cable modems, I have read of them having anywhere from 50 megabytes to a few hundred megabytes of space for your account.

Earthlink, for those of you that use them, has a new service called 'weblife' or something like that, which charges 3 bucks extra a month for a gigabyte of webspace which you can use for pictures and/or a place to back up files.

I have been playing around with the google picasaweb, so far it is pretty neat for what it is and the fact that it is free. They are still working the bugs out. I am not a big fan of having to download a big program in order to use it more efficiently though. The picasa program is about 20 MB's or so, and when you run it, it scans for every picture on your hardrive, which isn't something I want it to do. You can upload about 5 images at a time through a active x control in your browser, but that can quickly get tiring if you are uploading lots of pictures from an event like a car show.

Picasaweb is neat in that you can add little captions to each picture, have a slideshow, etc.. You can also have a album of photos online, and choose not to share them with the public.

This is what picasaweb looks like, if anyone wants to check it out:
