It was just what I thought it would be, a half hours worth of window after window after window of personal questions and downloads and activeX and, god knows what all, being added to my hard drive. That was the reason I didn’t want to join Webshots or Photobucket or any of the other places to archive my photos. Now on top of the 100 spamers emails I get every morning, I’ll probably have another 50 that I’ll have to throw in the garbage! Denny Graham Sandwich, IL Edit: and now I’m sneakin’ up on the one full hour of messing with Webshot. Tried to go back to the forum and I have multiple widows open for the forum and nothing is responding, had to shut down and reboot. Sorry host and hostess but, Posting a photo here is much to complicated for an old f&$t like me!

Wow, what a pain. We were wanting to get a discussion going about these photo-hosting places. Just recently, we've had a few folks come in using Google's Piscasa. I wondered how good that one is. I also notice with Webshots, I can no longer copy and paste a photo from their site. I am NOT going to download anything from them.
Let's hear from others ... is this kind of nuttyness new. Are the old accounts fairly easy.
Who do you think has the best photo hosting service?
Oh, another neat one was the Kodak one. I really liked the way theirs was laid out.
Google or Kodak, one of them allowed you to even put information with the picture, which I think is really helpful. I was thinking about doing something with one of them (big maybe) for the Kansas City pictures. That way, they could be in a slide show and I was hoping it would be easier than doing the slideshow from our software (which I am still learning).
Let me know what you all think ... and what you use ... the pros and cons.

Granted I already had a google account, which made it easier, but seems to be a good product. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 28 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 28 | I have been using Picasa for a couple weeks now and I really like it. I have had a Webshots account before and I agree with Peg, once it's there you can't download it to anywhere else (without an account).
I think it must be Kodak's that you can put info on the picture because (unless I just can't find the option) I don't think Picasa has that capability. 1965 Chevy Fleetside C10 If riding in an airplane is flying then riding in a boat is swimming... I visited many of the sites and found it difficult to determine the features of each, so I picked one I had seen a few time that had a good rating.
I chose photobucket, it was easy to get setup on and only took a few minutes to have pictures on the web. The great thing about these photo hosts is their basic featues don't cost anything, so if you don't like the way the one you chose works, just move to another one.
Photobucket does allow notes for your pictures but the length is limited. I would like a host that provides more note length.

I don't use it that much anymore since my internet provider gives enough space to host my own pics. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | The reason I chose Webshots, is that I see a lot of the other Stovebolters are using it and it looked like it was laid out pretty well. Photos generally seemed to open pretty quick and were size to look good on my screen. The personal info I’m crabbin bout is minor, just that they wanted to know my birth date and gender and I can only think of one reason they want that, that being they are going to use it to target me for more unwanted Spam. In all honesty, I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary since I rebooted the confuser. Now all I need to do is try to upload some photos and see how difficult/easy that is. I guess like the old saying goes , “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” if somebody’s gonna let me use their server space then I shouldn’t complain about their rules. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

About a week after I signed up they started making everone sign up thru Yahoo.
There are limitations unless I upgrade to a pay account, but it is OK for now.
Eventually, I want have my own web page, my ISP (cox) will host a web page at no extra charge. I just haven't spent the time to figure it out yet. If I remember correctly, it takes special soft ware to create the web page. Microsofts version I think is called "Front Page". Something that I didn't want to pay for. Kim Komando had a free program available, but I haven't had the patience or spare time to master it yet.

Most ISPs that aren't cheapie ones will offer a small (1-20 MB) "personal" file hosting space free of charge. The usual caveats are that you can't use it for any commercial purposes (e.g. ebay) and that it stays under a certain amount of "transfer" (bandwidth) per month. These come in both "FTP" and "Frontpage" [expectorates on floor] flavors. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | Originally posted by J Lucas: I have a free flickr account. It has gotten better over the years, but it's still not in my good books. But, then again, I'm a codejockey. I'm anal retentive to the point of being Obsessive Compulsive about my code being a certian way. That, and FP horks up most of my complex and cool "does stuff" code anyway. The ONLY benefit to Frontpage is that it is the ONLY Client (that I've found) for things that use "Frontpage" access for uploads. Cox should be able to provide you with an FTP account to upload your files. Most hosts do both. | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 | I saw Sixty5C10 comment several entries back about captions on Picasa. If you select an individual photo from an album, the is a small white box in the lower left hand corner. Click on that. You'll then be able to add a cation. BUT I don't know if that will be included for a posting here. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 73 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 73 | I've used picturetrail with good results, fast easy and simple..just renewed for another year | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | Hell, I just want to know if any of you are up for adoption? I had an account with them, and they would send me annoying emails all the time telling me I had not accessed my account in X number of days and why don't I add some pictures? I got tired of that, so I deleted everything I had in there. Then they started emailing me that they were going to delete my user name and account. My attitude was "yay, finally!." They did delete my account, it was gone(could not login, etc.) for the better part of a year. Then, suddenly, mysteriously I started getting emails from them again. My account came back from the dead, and there is not an option to delete it. Personally I think it is a way they have of padding their numbers about the number of users they have to the advertisers and/or stockholders. The best way to upload photos would be to use your own personal webspace, of which each internet service provider provides at least 10 megabytes of webspace, usually per email address. The broadband accounts like DSL and cable modems, I have read of them having anywhere from 50 megabytes to a few hundred megabytes of space for your account. Earthlink, for those of you that use them, has a new service called 'weblife' or something like that, which charges 3 bucks extra a month for a gigabyte of webspace which you can use for pictures and/or a place to back up files. I have been playing around with the google picasaweb, so far it is pretty neat for what it is and the fact that it is free. They are still working the bugs out. I am not a big fan of having to download a big program in order to use it more efficiently though. The picasa program is about 20 MB's or so, and when you run it, it scans for every picture on your hardrive, which isn't something I want it to do. You can upload about 5 images at a time through a active x control in your browser, but that can quickly get tiring if you are uploading lots of pictures from an event like a car show. Picasaweb is neat in that you can add little captions to each picture, have a slideshow, etc.. You can also have a album of photos online, and choose not to share them with the public. This is what picasaweb looks like, if anyone wants to check it out: http://picasaweb.google.com/woogeroo -W | | |
