Hello!

I recently got a 1961 Chevrolet C10 (for free) and it has a lot of different problems with it. The rear axle is broken and it needs motor/transmission work. Also on the list of work is that the windshield is cracked. My question is, what Chevrolet models and years have a windshield that will fit this one? What about the axle? There are a lot of different junk yards around my area with trucks of similar year models to mine, so I think I should be able to find parts pretty easily...

@nd your truck is a 61 and mine is a 62 so heres is where we stand 61 to 64 windsheild fit 61 to 65 body parts fit

Thanks for the info. This truck was actually my uncle's, the transmission and engine went out at the same time on it. He pressed down on the clutch one day, he heard a snap and it went straight to the floor. I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with the engine, there was like a clicking in the heads (that may not be right), but I know he got a head job done, and when he put them back on the truck wouldn't stay running, unless he held the key in the start position, then it would try to stay on. He was really close to getting the engine working again, and it was going to be towed, but then the axle broke, and he kinda gave up on it. He lived too far away from where it was parked and had very limited time and virtually no resources to help him with working on it. It's sat for about 10 years when I got it the other day. I'm going to bring it over to my house on a trailer, if I can get a new axle (or rear-end) for it.

The body parts, including the windshield, will only interchange between 1960 to 1963, then the 64 to 66's are the same. The difference is in the w/shield and doors. Look through the gallery to see the difference,

Cool, thanks. The passenger door does not shut either, however my cousin claims he can fix that. My objective for this truck is to just get it running, not perfectly restore it, but still keep it as stock as possible.

FYI, '60-'63 windshields are interchangeable and '64-'66 windshields are interchangeable.

The same is true for cabs, doors, fenders, hoods and dashes.

Many other parts are interchangeable between '60-'66, including seats, beds, wheels, handles, window cranks, rear glass, inner fenders tail lights and tailgates.

Does anyone know what about what it would cost to buy a windshield from a glass place? I'm just curious, I really hope that I will be able to find another one like mine with a windshield for like $25. The windshield had already been replaced once, then was damaged again in a storm. What about the rear axles? Again I hope to find an old junker to repair my junker with, but in case I can't... Also, how would I tell if the differential is locked up, as I have no idea why the axle snapped, and that has worried me.

If you are looking for cheap glass the scrapyard is the best bet, also try swap meets. A new one will run 400-500 bones. My 61 has a crack on the passenger side of the windhield but I am waiting until it goes really bad to put a new one in. I woud try hunting around at swap meets and stuff. If you find a truck with good glass for a few hundred ollars it might be worth it to buy it and take the windshield and other parts and scrap/sell the rest. Good luck!

That's actually exactly what I plan to do. Buy a truck for the windshield and rear axle (and hopefully other parts). Mine did only have a small crack, but in a storm it got him by a tree limb, so now there is a small hole and it has some pretty major cracks. The windshield was never actually sealed in (the original windshield was broken long before) as the truck wasn't running, so it has been letting water get into the cab - so we have some rusting action going on in the floorboard, but I know some guys who can weld me in some metal, then I can replace the carpet over it.

The worst thing that ever could have happened was for that truck to have sat for so long.

I was at a junk yard today, they have a 1964 Chevrolet Custom (I think it was), it was torn apart plenty, but it has a rear-end, as I can use in my truck. The guy told me it would be $125 for the rear-end, what do you guys think, is that a good deal?

I think that it sounds like a good deal, if it is in servicable condition. If it needs gears or shafts or anything like that then it is worth what it weighs. Good luck.

Thanks, I am pretty sure it is in working order. I need to get over to my truck again, I was talking to some mechanic today and he said it might not be broken - could just have been loose bolts and the axle fell out. That would be great! Although I don't think it's the case. I would like to just buy an axle for the ease of replacement and possibly cheaper - although I'm not sure if the rear-end differential is locked up, and the mechanic I was talking to seemed to think I would be best just replacing the whole thing.

By the way, just for general interest, a question, are 1960 - '63 Chevrolets rare or something? When I was told about this junk yard they told me they had a lot of '61s to 63s and more, but when I got there all they had were a couple of 40s, several 50s, 1 '64, 67s+ ... I can't seem to find a 61 - 63 really anywhere.

the axel out of that 64 is different that the one in your 61. the shock mounts are diffentent. but i guess you will be able to remove the shock mounts off of your old axel and weld them on the new one. like bill had said get in contact with RJ he has alot of parts. matt

My favorite glass shop here replaced the windshield in my '62 for about $250.00,including the seal. I've seen it cost lots more.If you decide to go with a used one,be sure to check around first and make sure there's a place that will install used glass. I only found one place out of six that would,and they wanted $85.00 labor,and NO guarantee,and wouldn't do it without a new gasket.(at $78.00).

So, the entire rear-end out of the 1964 will NOT work in my '61? At least not without some sort of conversion? Exactly what years will the entire rear-end switch out between these trucks?

I found a windshield gasket for 32 dollars on the internet, I forget where right now. I was planning on just putting in the windshield myself, with some help of course, my cousin and great-uncle transferred windshields from two Chevrolet trucks themselves.

There is also another junk-yard full of old Chevrolet's I just found out about near here, I'll be checking it out before too long.

Ahhh, pictures .. I don't have any pictures of it currently, however I do have a few of it while it was running, and was still my uncle's. I also have a picture of the truck my uncle had before this one, a 1960 Apache 10. I'll get 'em up. wink

the perches are spaced differently too.the 61 perches are 46" apart.the 64 perches are 42" apart.the panard bracket is six" off too.

Ok - so there is no way a 64 rear-end will fit in the '61?

What year models WILL work? Only '61 - '63? I was told by a mechanic and the guy at the junk-yard that they were mostly universal with the '60s and some 70s models - but apparently not.

Because your chassis is different. The cabs were the same from 60 thru 63. The frames, axles and suspension were the same from from 60 thru 62. They also started using different motors in 63. I would recommend you find a good used 60-62 for all your parts.

Thanks I'm glad I found this site and didn't buy one unknowing and then it not work. How about the axle (end?, insert?)? I have the axle end(?) from a 69 and which is what snapped on mine, and it goes right in there, except it doesn't lock in, so what years have the right teeth to fit in my '61? Or is it the same there: 60 - 62?
